ZAGHOUAN & ZRIBA

Zaghouan is located below the northern slope of a Djebel. Known for its natural mineral wealth and especially for its outstanding thermal springs, this originally Berber town fascinated the Romans who baptised it Ziqua before it was occupied by the Andalusian refugees in 1609.
On the mountain south of the city is the Roman water temple Djebel Zaghouan, source of an aqueduct which used to take water to the city of Carthage over 100 km away.

Road transport
Located about 44 km of Enfidha and 53 km of Tunis. Zriba is another of those abandoned berber villages. She is hidden on a small mountain near Zaghouan. Zriba was deserted by its residents in the 1960, who decamped to the new city on the plains below, leaving behind an abandoned shell of a city, which is now an incredibly ethereal place to explore. Set in a saddle between the high hills, atmospheric old Zriba lies in near ruin – domed houses the color of the surrounding mountains is encircled by stone walls that have crumbled like a child’s building blocks.
